How NuCalm Can Improve Your Comfort during Gum Therapy Procedures

Last updated 5 years ago

Dental procedures, including gum therapy, can be uncomfortable and may cause anxiety in some patients. The NuCalm system is designed to help patients undergo these necessary procedures in the most relaxed state possible. NuCalm combines several sensory tools to soothe the body and mind, mimicking the way the body naturally prepares for sleep.

Oral Tablets
Patients are given tablets that counteract the effects of adrenaline, and thus reduce the body’s stress response. Combined with the other elements in the NuCalm system, the effect of the tablets should be felt within five minutes. These tablets are non-narcotic and have no lingering side effects. Patients are conscious throughout the procedure and can respond to commands. They leave their appointments relaxed but alert and should be able to drive and function as normal.

Audio Signals
The sounds of dental tools can trigger fear and anxiety in many patients. Using the NuCalm system, patients wear noise-canceling headphones and listen to soothing music. An auditory pacing signal effectively creates a change in brain waves, encouraging a deeply relaxed state.

Visual Signals
NuCalm technology was designed to diminish stress triggers, including the bright lights of a dental office. Light-blocking glasses are worn to reduce visual stimulation during a patient’s visit. The reduction of light to the optic nerve increases the rate of alpha wave production in the brain, which is associated with a feeling of relaxation.

Microcurrent stimulation patches, placed on pressure points behind each ear, aid in relaxation. This process, called Cranial Electrotherapy Stimulation, or CES, has been FDA approved to treat anxiety, depression, and insomnia.
