Everything You Need To Know About Veneers

Last updated 6 years ago

Dental veneers are one of the most popular ways to dramatically improve the look of your smile. Essentially, veneers are ultra-thin shells of porcelain that are custom-made to fit over your teeth, changing their appearance. Dental veneers can be used for patients that have worn, chipped, or discolored teeth. This cosmetic dentistry solution also fixes uneven, irregularly-shaped, or misaligned teeth.

Veneers have several benefits, including: a natural look, stain resistance, high likelihood of being tolerated, and the security of a conservative approach to cosmetic dental flaws.

The first step in the process of getting dental veneers is to meet with your cosmetic dentist. You’ll need to describe your aesthetic goals for your smile, and your dentist will examine your teeth and discuss whether you are a good candidate for dental veneers.

Once you and your dentist have determined that veneers will satisfy your cosmetic goals, it’s time to schedule your first treatment appointment. Your dentist may begin by using a local anesthetic in order to remove about one-half millimeter of enamel from teeth—this will make space for the thickness of the veneer. Next, your dentist will take an impression of your teeth and send it off to the lab, where your veneers will be custom-made.

After a week or two, your veneers will return to your dentist’s office and you’ll come in to have them bonded to your teeth. Your dentist will first clean, polish, and etch your teeth to ensure a strong bond. Next, a strong cement will be applied to the veneer, which will be placed on the front of the teeth. Your dentist may use a special light to harden the cement quickly. After the cement is dry, your dentist will make any final adjustments to the veneers to ensure a proper bite.
